Hank Johnson references Holocaust to slam Trump admin deportations, judge’s arrest

House Judiciary Committee member Hank Johnson, R-Ga., caused quite a stir with his recent remarks during a Wednesday committee meeting. Johnson drew parallels to the Holocaust while indirectly criticizing the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia and the arrest of Milwaukee Judge Hannah Dugan.

During the meeting, Johnson referenced German preacher Martin Niemöller’s confession about remaining silent in the face of mounting atrocities committed by the Nazi Party. He began by stating, “You know, first, they came for the Latinos outside of the Home Depots, trying to get work so that they could feed their families.”

He continued, “And I didn’t say anything about it because I’m not a Latino at the Home Depot.” Johnson went on to describe the deportation of Hispanic individuals with tattoos and backward hats, as well as Latinas caring for children who were deported, including American citizens and a child receiving cancer treatment.

Johnson also made mention of students protesting in support of Hamas on campus, who have been targeted by the Trump administration. He criticized the use of force against these students and highlighted the arrest of Judge Dugan for allegedly aiding an illegal immigrant in evading federal immigration authorities.

In a poignant moment, Johnson reflected on the consequences of remaining silent in the face of injustice. He emphasized the importance of upholding constitutional rights and due process for all individuals, regardless of their immigration status or citizenship.

Despite Johnson’s impassioned plea for due process, an amendment seeking to protect the rights of individuals under the Fifth Amendment was ultimately voted down during the meeting.

Following Johnson’s remarks, the official House Judiciary Committee Republican account mocked his comments, drawing attention to his colorful history of controversial statements. Johnson’s tendency to make bold statements dates back to 2010 when he famously expressed concerns about Guam potentially “tipping over and capsizing” due to overpopulation during a military hearing.

In light of recent developments surrounding Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s case, Democrats have shifted their focus towards concerns about due process, particularly after the release of Tennessee police video depicting Garcia’s alleged involvement in trafficking migrants.

Overall, Johnson’s impassioned speech serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking out against injustice and upholding the rights of all individuals. His words underscore the need for continued vigilance in protecting constitutional rights and ensuring due process for everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances.
