Canada’s Global Passport Ranking: A Closer Look
A recent global ranking has brought into question Canada’s reputation as a country open to international travel. While Singapore continues to hold the title of having the most powerful passport in the world, Canada has found itself among the “top 5 losers” in a new global ranking released recently.
According to the 2025 Henley Passport Index, Canada now sits at seventh place among 199 passports, a drop of three spots over the past decade. The Henley Passport Index ranks passports based on the number of destinations they can enter without a visa, using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Canada shares the seventh spot with Malta and Poland, with all three countries offering visa-free access to 188 out of 227 destinations.
Singapore leads the pack with visa-free access to 195 destinations, followed by Japan in second place with 193 destinations, and a tie for third place between Finland, France, Germany, Italy, South Korea, and Spain, each offering visa-free access to 192 destinations.
In terms of other countries, China has seen significant improvement, rising from 94th place in 2015 to 60th place in 2025 with a visa-free score increase of 40 destinations. The United Arab Emirates has also made strides, now ranking 10th with visa-free access to 185 destinations.
On the flip side, Venezuela has experienced a significant decline, dropping from 30th to 45th place. The United States, once a top contender, has also fallen in the rankings, dropping from second to ninth place over the past decade. The United Kingdom, which held the top spot in 2015, now sits in fifth place.
At the bottom of the list lies Afghanistan, with visa-free access to only 26 destinations. This stark contrast is highlighted by the fact that Singaporeans can travel to 169 more destinations visa-free compared to Afghan passport holders, marking the largest mobility gap in the history of the Henley Passport Index.
The Henley Passport Index’s latest ranking provides valuable insights into global travel trends and visa-free access for different countries. As the world continues to evolve, staying informed about passport rankings can help individuals and governments make informed decisions regarding international travel.
