Hot tub hangout crashed by wild cougar

Natalee Dennis and her father, Steve Dennis, were enjoying a relaxing soak in their outdoor hot tub in Tofino, on B.C.’s Vancouver Island, when they heard a rustling noise nearby. Initially thinking it was just a raccoon or a cat, Natalee decided to use her cellphone flashlight to investigate and started filming the encounter.
As they peered over the edge of the tub, they spotted a pair of glowing yellow eyes staring back at them through the foliage. Initially thinking it was a raccoon, Steve dismissed Natalee’s suggestion that it might be a cougar. However, as they got a better view, Natalee exclaimed, “Oh, it is a cougar, Dad!”
The video captures the moment the cougar’s head and upper torso come into view, just a few feet away from the hot tub. The shock and excitement in their voices are palpable as they realize the proximity of the wild animal. Despite Steve’s initial disbelief, they quickly reacted calmly and slowly moved inside, where they observed the cougar for another 20 minutes.
Posting the video on TikTok, Natalee has received thousands of views and comments praising their composed reaction to the close encounter. Many viewers were impressed by their nonchalant demeanor in the face of danger.
Growing up in the area, Natalee and her father are familiar with cougar encounters and knew how to handle the situation. While she never expected to be so close to a cougar, she emphasized the importance of staying calm and maintaining a safe distance from the animal.
Although there have been recent cougar sightings in the region, the B.C. Conservation Officer Service reports that there haven’t been more sightings than usual in recent months. While cougars can pose a risk to humans, attacks are rare, according to WildSafe B.C.
Despite the encounter, Natalee’s family has not been deterred from using their hot tub. However, they have decided to adjust their schedule and avoid using it at night for the time being. Adhering to safety guidelines, they continue to enjoy their outdoor space while remaining vigilant of their surroundings.
