House GOP to pull late-night session after Republican mutiny on Trump budget bill

House lawmakers are gearing up for a late-night session on Capitol Hill as the deadline to pass President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” looms just days away. The House Budget Committee is set to convene at 10 p.m. for a crucial vote to advance the comprehensive legislation towards a full chamber-wide vote later in the week.

Initial plans to move the bill forward on Friday morning were derailed by a mutiny led by four members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus – Reps. Chip Roy, R-Texas, Ralph Norman, R-S.C., Josh Brecheen, R-Okla., and Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., who joined Democrats in voting against the bill. The dissenting lawmakers are primarily opposed to certain aspects of the legislation’s Medicaid provisions, which they argue are necessary to combat waste, fraud, and abuse. However, they are particularly concerned about the Medicaid work requirements for able-bodied individuals, which are not set to take effect until 2029.

In addition to the Medicaid concerns, the conservative faction is pushing for a more aggressive effort to repeal green energy tax subsidies that were enacted under the former Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). This stance has put them at odds with fellow Republican lawmakers whose districts have businesses that benefit from these tax incentives.

House GOP leaders and the White House have championed the bill as a landmark fiscal reform effort. The legislation is being pursued through the budget reconciliation process, allowing the majority party to pass significant legislation without the need for bipartisan support. However, the narrow margins in both the House and Senate highlight the challenges facing Republican leaders as they navigate the legislative process.

Despite the obstacles, Speaker Mike Johnson expressed confidence in the GOP’s ability to overcome differences and meet the Memorial Day deadline for advancing the bill. Negotiations are ongoing to address concerns raised by dissenting members, including the Medicaid work requirements and the repeal of green energy tax subsidies.

The ongoing debate highlights the complexities of crafting major legislation and the delicate balance required to secure sufficient support within a closely divided Congress. As lawmakers convene for the late-night vote, the outcome remains uncertain, with key issues such as Medicaid, green energy subsidies, and State and Local tax deduction caps still unresolved. The fate of President Trump’s ambitious agenda hangs in the balance as House Republicans work towards a consensus on the “big, beautiful bill.”
