Rep. John Larson says complex partial seizure ruled as cause of pausing episode

Rep. John Larson, D-Conn., disclosed on Tuesday that a complex partial seizure was determined to be the cause of the incident that occurred during his House floor speech on Monday. The veteran lawmaker, who has served in Congress for over two decades, experienced a momentary pause while delivering his remarks. He briefly stopped speaking, uttered a few words, and then stood silently for approximately 14 seconds before resuming his speech, which was marked by halting remarks and awkward pauses.

Following the episode, Larson’s office initially indicated that the pause was likely due to an adverse reaction to a new medication and that he was undergoing tests administered by the House Attending Physician as a precaution. Subsequently, in a statement released on Tuesday, the congressman confirmed that a complex partial seizure had been identified as the underlying cause of the incident.

Larson recounted the events, stating, “Yesterday, at around noon, I experienced a medical incident on the House floor, when my speech momentarily paused. Following the incident, I saw the House Attending Physician, Dr. Monahan, who referred me for further evaluation. After a round of tests, it was determined that the cause of the brief pause in my speech was a complex partial seizure.”

The 76-year-old legislator explained that he had previously undergone a heart valve replacement due to a congenital condition affecting the shape of his aortic valve. He noted that individuals with this condition may develop symptoms like those he experienced during his speech on Monday. Larson revealed that doctors had prescribed medication to reduce the likelihood of a recurrence and expressed his readiness to resume his duties in Congress.

“I am grateful to Dr. Monahan and the staff, and I extend my deepest appreciation to my family, friends, colleagues, constituents, and everyone who reached out with their well wishes and offers of support. I am looking forward to getting back to work for the people of Connecticut’s First District,” Larson affirmed.

The congressman’s health scare serves as a reminder of the importance of monitoring and managing medical conditions, even for individuals in prominent positions of public service. As Larson prepares to return to his legislative responsibilities, his experience underscores the significance of prioritizing health and well-being in the performance of one’s duties.
