Hundreds mourn at Walkerton, Ont., school vigil for teacher, students killed in crash

The town of Walkerton in southwestern Ontario is still reeling from the tragic loss of four teenage athletes and their teacher who were killed in a multi-vehicle crash while returning home from a softball tournament. The deadly collision that occurred last Friday has left the community in shock and has sparked an outpouring of support for the victims’ friends and families.

On Sunday night, hundreds of Walkerton residents gathered for a candlelight vigil outside Walkerton District Community School, where the teenage girls, aged 16 and 17, studied and where their teacher, 33-year-old Matt Eckert, worked as a coach. The mayor of Brockton, Chris Peabody, expressed the deep impact of the tragedy on the town, stating that it will take time for the community to heal.

Although the identities of the teenagers have not been officially released, the Tara Twins U18 girls softball team identified two of the victims as Rowan McLeod and Kaydance Ford. The team expressed their grief over the loss of these young athletes who were returning from playing the sport they loved.

Matt Eckert, the teacher and coach who also lost his life in the crash, was remembered as a beloved member of the community. He served as the Junior B assistant coach for the NorthStars Lacrosse Club and his impact on the players was described as indescribable. The flags outside the school and across the town have been lowered to half-mast in honor of the victims.

Community members have been paying their respects by adding flowers and mementos to a growing memorial outside Walkerton District Community School. Students who knew the victims personally shared their memories of Eckert as a caring teacher and coach who always had a smile on his face.

The Ontario Provincial Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash that claimed the lives of the five individuals. The community has come together to support one another during this time of unimaginable grief, with mental health resources being offered to students and staff.
