In Calgary courts: Calgary man charged with domestic abuse after being shot by police granted bail

A Calgary man charged with domestic assault after being shot by police is seeking to review officers’ body-worn camera evidence before moving forward with his case. Defence counsel Matthew Walton appeared in Calgary Court of Justice and requested an adjournment to Sept. 17 for Bernard Arthur White’s case.
During the court appearance, White, 61, accused guards at the Calgary Remand Centre of assaulting him before being silenced by Walton. The lawyer informed Justice Peter Barley that he and the Crown had reached an agreement on bail conditions for White, which include a non-deposit bail of $1,000 and mandatory counselling.
Barley instructed White to undergo assessments for counselling related to domestic violence, as well as psychiatric and psychological issues. White is also required to reside at a specific address in northeast Calgary and have no contact with the alleged victim. In addition, if probation deems it necessary, White must undergo further forms of counselling.
White was charged with assault after a domestic incident in the community of Yorkville, which led to an officer-involved shooting. He was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after his arrest.
In a separate case, a Calgary motorcyclist, Joshua Daniel Poirier, who allegedly fled a traffic stop at speeds of up to 200 km/h, remains in custody while he seeks legal representation. Duty counsel Bob Haslam appeared on Poirier’s behalf in court and requested an adjournment to allow him time to find a lawyer.
Poirier faces eight charges, including dangerous driving, after he fled from an attempted traffic stop by driving onto a sidewalk and through a park before reaching high speeds and disobeying traffic laws. He eventually stopped and fled on foot but was apprehended with the assistance of the Alberta RCMP.
Poirier, who was on probation for a robbery charge in Edmonton, is also facing charges of flight from police, driving while disqualified, and breaching probation orders. His case is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday.
