DiJonai Carrington pushes back after referees call security during Wings game

Dallas Wings player DiJonai Carrington made headlines once again, this time for speaking out against referees after security was called on her during a game against the Chicago Sky. The incident occurred during a heated altercation with officials, as Carrington became increasingly demonstrative on the court.
In a social media post on X, Carrington expressed her frustration with the situation, calling the summoning of security a “microaggression.” She shared a clip of the incident, showing a security guard getting between her and an official as tensions rose. The official backed away from Carrington, pulling the security guard in front of her for protection.
Former Dallas Wings player Cheryl Swoopes also weighed in on the incident, criticizing the referee who called security. Swoopes questioned why the referee felt the need to summon security and suggested that he should not be allowed to officiate games in the future.
This is not the first time Carrington has been at the center of controversy in the WNBA. Last season, she made headlines for giving Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark a black eye after poking her during a playoff game. Carrington laughed with her teammate Marina Mabrey after the incident, sparking outrage among fans and fellow players.
Despite claiming that she did not intentionally poke Clark in the eye and was not laughing about the incident, Carrington appeared to make light of the controversy in an Instagram Live video with her girlfriend, NaLyssa Smith. In the video, Smith accidentally poked Carrington in the eye, prompting laughter between the two.
Carrington has also been vocal about social and political issues, wearing a shirt that said “The F— Donald Trump Tour” during a league season and calling for action in response to President Trump’s policies during a press conference. She emphasized the importance of women’s rights and LGBTQ rights, urging WNBA players to take a stand.
As the WNBA continues to navigate issues of social justice and activism, Carrington’s outspoken nature and willingness to speak out against injustice have made her a polarizing figure in the league. Despite facing criticism and controversy, Carrington remains unapologetic in her advocacy for change and equality both on and off the court.
