Israel begins heavy airstrikes ahead of Gaza City onslaught

Israel Launches Offensive in Gaza City, Killing Hamas Official
Israeli forces initiated airstrikes and tank fire in Gaza City on Sunday night, targeting the neighborhood of Sheikh Radwan, believed to be Hamas’ last stronghold. The assault resulted in the death of a top Hamas official, Abu Obeida, who was a key figure in the terrorist group’s military wing. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced the successful strike, warning that more Hamas members would be targeted in the impending invasion of Gaza City.
The Israeli military accused Obeida of orchestrating propaganda and psychological warfare against Israel, particularly in relation to the deadly terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, which claimed the lives of over 1,200 people. Despite Hamas not confirming Obeida’s death, the Israeli Defense Forces declared that his demise would put an end to his dissemination of lies and terror.
In response to the escalating conflict, IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir issued a stern warning to all Hamas officials, both domestic and abroad, stating that they are all viable targets. The Israeli government has ordered the full evacuation of Gaza City, prompting tens of thousands of residents to flee the area in anticipation of the impending invasion.
As the situation intensifies, concerns have been raised by the UN, UK, and Red Cross about the catastrophic consequences of a military takeover of Gaza City. The humanitarian organizations have emphasized the potential impact on civilians and remaining hostages, highlighting the urgent need for a diplomatic solution to avoid further escalation of the conflict.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has defended the offensive as necessary to defeat Hamas and rescue the hostages held captive since October 7. While discussions on cease-fire proposals have not been prioritized in the security meetings, the focus remains on dismantling Hamas’ infrastructure and securing the release of the remaining hostages.
As tensions continue to rise in Gaza City, the international community closely monitors the situation, hoping for a swift resolution to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
