'It's really about the horses': Legendary rider Laura Kraut reflects on career in return to Spruce Meadows

Laura Kraut made a triumphant return to the International Ring at Spruce Meadows after a 20-year absence. The 59-year-old American rider, currently ranked No. 12 in the world, decided to compete in the Masters tournament due to the 50th anniversary celebrations and significant prize money on offer.
Reflecting on her successful career, Kraut emphasized the importance of constantly striving to find and develop top-quality horses. She acknowledged the competitive nature of the sport and the need to maintain a strong string of horses to compete at the highest level.
Having spent time in Europe early in her career, Kraut credited the experience with making her a stronger rider. She also highlighted the influence of her longtime partner, British show jumping legend Nick Skelton, in her journey to success.
Kraut’s impressive resume includes a gold medal at the 2008 Olympics and silver medals at the 2020 and 2024 Games. She fondly recalled her victory in Hong Kong with her horse Cedric, describing it as a magical moment that will always hold a special place in her heart.
At the 2025 Masters tournament, Kraut competed with her mare Bisquetta after her planned mount, Baloutinue, suffered a minor injury. Despite turning 60 later in the year, Kraut emphasized that age is just a number in show jumping, with experience often proving to be a valuable asset in competition.
In the ATCO Cup class, young French rider Nina Mallevaey emerged victorious on My Clementine, while Kraut placed third on Tres Bien Z. Kraut’s other horse, Emeraldo 4, had a mishap during the class, but both horse and rider emerged unharmed.
German rider Richard Vogel claimed his second victory of the week in the metre-60 CANA Cup, showcasing his skill and speed aboard his stallion Cloudio. Friday’s schedule at Spruce Meadows includes the Paramount Resources Cup, the Tourmaline Oil Cup, and the thrilling ATCO Electric Six Bar competition.
As Kraut continues to impress with her talent and experience, she remains a formidable presence in the world of show jumping, inspiring riders of all ages to pursue their passion for the sport.
