Jasmine Crockett invokes viral ‘folding chair’ moment from 2023 Montgomery brawl

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, delivered an inspiring commencement speech to the graduating class at Tougaloo College in Jackson, Mississippi, on Sunday. She emphasized the importance of resilience in the face of adversity, using the symbol of a chair as a powerful metaphor.
Crockett referenced the viral video from August 2023 of a group of White boaters attacking a Black riverboat captain, Dameion Pickett, in Montgomery, Alabama. In the video, a Black man raised a white folding chair over his head in defense of Pickett, becoming a symbol of resistance and solidarity.
Drawing on this powerful image, Crockett urged the graduating class to remember the importance of pulling up their own seat at the table. She highlighted the bystanders who rushed to defend Pickett when he was under attack, reminding students of the strength and unity that can be found in standing up for what is right.
However, Crockett’s remarks were met with criticism from conservatives, with Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, denouncing her comments as “not cool.” President Donald Trump also engaged in a contentious exchange with Crockett, calling her a “low I.Q. person” and criticizing her as the future of the Democratic Party which he described as being in “disarray.”
Reports have indicated that Crockett is eyeing the chair position of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, where she could potentially lead investigations into Trump’s agenda. Conservatives have accused Crockett of inciting violence in the past, citing her comments about Sen. Ted Cruz and Democrats needing to be willing to “punch” in races against Republicans.
Despite the backlash, Crockett remains steadfast in her commitment to advocating for justice and accountability. She has faced criticism for her rhetoric, including calling Gov. Greg Abbott, R-Texas, “Governor Hot Wheels,” and for comments about Elon Musk, which were later clarified as nonviolent resistance.
In the face of adversity and opposition, Rep. Jasmine Crockett continues to stand up for what she believes in, urging others to do the same. Her message of resilience and determination serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of using a chair – or any means necessary – to fight for justice and equality.
