Catholic school in Queens collecting pajama donations for children in homeless shelters

Faculty, parents, and students at St. Kevin Catholic Academy in New York are coming together to make a difference in the local community by collecting pajama donations for children in need. The initiative, in collaboration with The Pajama Program and Girl Scout troops, aims to provide new sleepwear for children 12 and under who are experiencing economic hardships.
Eliana Montalvo, the Academy Parent Associate event coordinator, highlighted the importance of teaching students about empathy and giving back to those less fortunate. She emphasized that the children at St. Kevin are privileged to attend a Catholic school and understand the luxury it entails. The fundraising effort has received a positive response from parents, who have been encouraged to spread the word beyond the school community.
Allison Murphy, the principal of St. Kevin, expressed gratitude for the active involvement of the Academy Parent Association in organizing the pajama drive. She commended their dedication to not only the children within the school but also those outside the community who are in need.
The collection of pajamas is not just about providing basic necessities but also promoting proper hygiene and a sense of security for children. Alexis Abate, a licensed professional counselor, explained that clean pajamas play a crucial role in a child’s comfort and emotional well-being before bedtime. She emphasized that having a new set of pajamas signifies safety, warmth, and care, which can have a positive impact on a child’s emotional regulation.
For those interested in contributing to the cause, St. Kevin Catholic Academy has opened an Amazon wishlist for donors to purchase pajamas that will be sent directly to the school. The initiative welcomes both local and national support until the end of November.
Through the collective efforts of faculty, parents, and students, St. Kevin Catholic Academy is demonstrating the power of community and compassion in making a difference in the lives of children facing economic hardships. By providing clean, comfy pajamas, they are not only meeting a basic need but also offering a sense of security and comfort to those in need.
