Brantford, Ont., Dagernechte concludes temporarily after the child has found a rabid bat, hand over it to the employee

A daycare center in Brantford, Ontario, is currently closed for a public health inspection after a bat found on the premises tested positive for rabies. Grand Erie Public Health confirmed the presence of the virus in the bat that was discovered on Monday at Creative Minds Daycare. As a precautionary measure, the daycare center, located near Wade Street and Brunswick Avenue in West Brant, will remain closed until the health department completes its inspection and ensures that no more bats are present.

The daycare center serves approximately 145 children and employs around 30 staff members. Parents were promptly notified about the situation, and individuals who had direct contact with the bat were advised to receive prophylaxis treatment to prevent infection. Public Health emphasized the importance of swift action in cases of potential rabies exposure, as the virus can be fatal if left untreated.

Concerns were raised by parents about the communication from the daycare center regarding the incident. Some parents were worried about the possibility of more bats being present in the facility, especially after reports of previous bat sightings. The importance of early treatment against rabies was highlighted, citing a tragic case from last year where a child in the Brantford area died from rabies after coming into contact with a bat.

The daycare center’s owner, Vicki McNabb, and spokesperson Laura Bailey addressed the situation, stating that proactive measures were being taken to address the issue. Steps were being taken to ensure that any bats that may have entered the building are safely removed and prevented from re-entering. The daycare plans to reopen once public health gives the all-clear.

Moving forward, Creative Minds Daycare is committed to keeping families informed about any developments and improvements being implemented. Public Health officials are conducting a thorough investigation, including interviews with staff and communication with caregivers to identify anyone who may have been exposed to the virus.

In conclusion, the safety and well-being of the children and staff at Creative Minds Daycare are of utmost importance. By taking proactive measures and working closely with public health authorities, the daycare center aims to address the situation effectively and ensure a safe environment for all.
