Rising stars helps WNBA smash all-time attendance record

The 2025 WNBA regular season is in its final stretch, and the league has announced a record-breaking number of fans attending games this year. As of Wednesday, a total of 2,501,609 fans have attended WNBA games in person, setting an all-time attendance record that surpasses the previous mark set in 2002.

Back in 2002, the WNBA had 16 teams, but it currently consists of just 13 franchises. It took 256 games for the league to reach the attendance milestone in 2002. The surge in popularity of women’s college basketball, fueled by the Caitlin Clark-Angel Reese rivalry, has carried over to the WNBA. Last season, sold-out arenas became the norm for Clark and the Indiana Fever.

Although Clark and Reese have faced injuries this season, ticket sales have remained strong due to the emergence of rookie guard Paige Bueckers in Dallas, the excitement surrounding the expansion Golden State Valkyries, and increased television coverage.

The regular season will conclude in mid-September. The Minnesota Lynx have already secured a playoff spot, while the Chicago Sky, Connecticut Sun, and Dallas Wings have been eliminated from postseason contention.

The WNBA expanded the schedule from 40 games last year to 44 games this season. The league continues to grow in popularity and attract new fans, thanks to the talented players and exciting matchups on the court.
