Kitchener, Ont. artist designs new Raptors logo for Indigenous Heritage Game

The Toronto Raptors have recently unveiled a stunning new Indigenous-inspired logo, designed by Kitchener-based visual artist Luke Swinson. This logo will be prominently featured on jerseys and merchandise during the upcoming Indigenous Heritage Game, a special event that celebrates the resilience and enduring spirit of Indigenous Peoples.

Swinson, who has Anishinaabe roots and is a member of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to create this meaningful piece of art. In a media release, he shared, “Representing what’s important to me and my community through such an iconic and recognizable logo is incredible. Growing up, seeing this kind of representation would have filled me with such pride and inspiration, and I hope to share that feeling with Indigenous youth of today.”

The redesigned logo focuses on Indigenous joy, depicting two Indigenous individuals joyfully playing basketball. Below them, a river flows over hills as the sun sets and an eagle soars above. Each element of the logo holds deep significance for Indigenous Peoples – water symbolizes life, the sun represents life-giving force, and the eagle signifies the connection to Creator and the spiritual world. Additionally, a feather is included in the design, symbolizing honour, wisdom, strength, and closeness to Creator.

Furthermore, the logo incorporates the four sacred medicines of tobacco, sage, cedar, and sweetgrass, representing the vital traditions and ceremonies of Indigenous peoples across Turtle Island. This thoughtful inclusion pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of Indigenous communities.

The Toronto Raptors will be showcasing this new logo during their annual Indigenous Heritage Game on January 6th, where they will face off against the Milwaukee Bucks at Scotiabank Arena at 7:30 p.m. Fans can look forward to a special halftime performance by Madison Noon, an Indigenous member of the Raptors’ dance team, as well as an artist spotlight video highlighting Swinson and his creative process.
