LA County school districts announce fire-related closures; 3 buildings sustain damage

Widespread wildfires have ravaged Los Angeles County, leading to the closure of several city schools. Among the hardest hit are Palisades Charter High School, Palisades Charter Elementary School, and Marquez Elementary School, all of which have sustained significant damage from the Palisades fire.
The Los Angeles Unified Schools (LAUSD) confirmed the extent of the damage, with a spokesperson stating that they are working closely with authorities and emergency response teams to assess the situation and determine the next steps to minimize disruption to students’ learning.
Footage from Fox News affiliate, KTTV, captured the heartbreaking scene of Palisades Charter Elementary School engulfed in flames. In total, at least 24 school districts have announced full or partial closures due to the wildfires, according to the LA County Office of Education.
Alhambra Unified Superintendent Denise Jaramillo expressed the need for more time to inspect schools for safety, citing poor air quality caused by excessive dust and smoke from the fires. The statement also mentioned that a significant number of staff members are under evacuation orders, impacting school operations and staffing levels.
Several southern California school districts, including Burbank Unified School District, Glendale Unified School District, La Canada Unified, and Pasadena Unified School District, have announced closures through Friday. The LAUSD will continue to assess the situation and decide on Friday classes on Thursday.
Resources for student academic support and mental health services are available through LAUSD’s Continuity of Learning plan and the Student and Family Wellness Resource Line. As the community comes together to support those affected by the wildfires, it is essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of students and staff in the affected areas.
