A specialized unit within the Los Angeles Police Department has ceased providing security for former Vice President Kamala Harris, according to a recent report.

Initially, officers from LAPD’s Metropolitan Division had stepped in to offer security for Harris after President Donald Trump revoked her security detail in August. However, this protection came to an end on Saturday following criticism from the Los Angeles Police Protective League, the LAPD’s union, which deemed the arrangement as “nuts” and argued that taxpayers should not be funding it.

The union’s board of directors stated to Fox News Digital on Monday, “We are pleased to announce that the Metro officers who were assigned to protect the multimillionaire former presidential candidate are now back on the streets combating crime.”

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass clarified that using LAPD resources for Harris’ security was always intended as a temporary measure. “The plan was always to provide temporary support, and I thank L.A.P.D. for safeguarding former V.P. Harris and consistently prioritizing the safety of all Angelenos,” Bass mentioned in a statement to The New York Times.

Bass’ office did not respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital.

Trump’s Revocation of Harris’ Security Detail

Formerly, Bass had criticized Trump’s decision to revoke Harris’ security detail as an “act of revenge” against a political opponent, which she claimed had put Harris in danger, as per The New York Times.

The LAPD did not provide comments to Fox News Digital regarding this matter.

It was reported by The Los Angeles Times on August 29 that the California Highway Patrol had taken over security duties for Harris, with approval from California Governor Gavin Newsom.

“Our office does not comment on security arrangements,” stated Izzy Gardon, a spokesperson for Newsom, to Fox News Digital.

Secret Service Protection for Harris

The White House confirmed that Trump had revoked Harris’ security detail on August 29, noting that typically, former vice presidents are only given Secret Service protection for six months after leaving office. However, Biden had extended Harris’ protection by an additional year before leaving office.

CNN was the first to report on Trump’s memo regarding the removal of Harris’ Secret Service security detail. A spokesperson for Harris did not provide a reason for the elimination of the protection.

The U.S. Secret Service did not respond to requests for comments from Fox News Digital.

As reported by The Wall Street Journal in July, Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, had his security detail removed.

According to the Secret Service’s website, former presidents and their spouses receive Secret Service protection for life unless they opt out voluntarily.
