Firefighters from three departments responded Wednesday to a large industrial fire at a bus depot in Reserve Mines, N.S.
Cape Breton Regional Police were called to Carabin’s & Transoverland Ltd. on Wilson Road around 1:30 p.m.
By late Wednesday afternoon, police had blocked off a section of the roadway and large clouds of white smoke could be seen billowing up from the building.
Neighbours living nearby did not want to be interviewed, but said they’d heard loud bangs before noticing flames coming from the building.
Const. Gary Fraser said the business typically deals with heavy machinery, buses and garbage trucks, but it was unclear exactly what is inside the building.
“There have been several explosions and shrapnel flying in the air,” said Fraser.
“We were told that everybody got out safe, we’re just waiting now for the fire department to put the fire out and then we can assess from there.”
Fraser said it appears the fire involves tires and will likely take several hours to extinguish.
