Legal group apologizes after cancellation of noted Syrian Canadian’s speech sparks ‘profound’ reaction

The Canadian legal association that recently faced backlash for cancelling a keynote speech by Syrian Canadian entrepreneur and peacekeeping advocate Tareq Hadhad has issued an apology for its decision. The Advocates’ Society, which rescinded its invitation for Hadhad to deliver a keynote speech, has acknowledged the “profound reactions” surrounding its decision.
In a statement released on Friday, the organization expressed regret for the harm it caused and admitted to not fully living up to its mission and core values. The statement mentioned that members had raised concerns about the way decisions were made, the lack of diverse consultation, and the basis for cancelling Hadhad’s speech.
Following the controversial decision, a number of prominent lawyers resigned from the organization, including high-profile criminal lawyer Marie Henein and litigator Danielle Robitaille. Robitaille stated in a social media post that it was difficult for her to align herself with an organization that cancels speakers due to disagreement.
Employment and human rights lawyer Arleen Huggins also cancelled her membership, criticizing the organization for stifling free thought and speech in a “Trumpian manner.” The wave of resignations and criticisms prompted the Canadian Muslim Lawyers Association, the National GC Network, the South Asian Bar Association of Canada, and 40 law professors to call on The Advocates’ Society to reverse its decision.
The initial decision to cancel Hadhad’s speech was reportedly based on concerns about his position on the conflict in Gaza. Some members had raised issues about Hadhad’s public posts on social media, particularly his use of the term “genocide.” Lawyer Jonathan Lisus had written to the organization, highlighting what he described as Hadhad’s “one-sided view” of the conflict.
Despite the controversy, Hadhad had called for humanitarian aid to Gaza and an end to the violence in his social media posts. He had emphasized the importance of saving civilian lives and stopping the killing, particularly the impact on children in Gaza.
The Advocates’ Society is now facing pressure to reverse its decision and uphold its commitment to diverse perspectives and freedom of speech. The organization’s handling of the situation has drawn criticism from various legal professionals and advocacy groups, who have emphasized the importance of defending pro-Palestinian expression and fostering diversity and inclusion within the legal community.
