Despite receiving two notices of violations with penalties totaling $20,000, the farm has not taken adequate steps to address the situation.

Supporters of the farm have rallied against the culling of nearly 400 birds, with prominent figures such as health secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Dr. Mehmet Oz urging Canadian officials to reconsider their decision. Demonstrators have gathered at the farm in Edgewood, B.C., protesting the order to cull the ostriches.

Katie Pasitney, whose parents own the farm, expressed uncertainty about the fines imposed by the CFIA, stating that “nothing surprises me at this point.” The farm plans to issue a response to the CFIA statement on Monday.

During a recent court case, it was revealed that Universal Ostrich Farm failed to implement proper biosecurity measures, allowing wild animals and people to come into contact with infected birds. The farm’s claims of using the ostriches for scientific research have not been substantiated by the CFIA, casting doubt on their intentions.

The CFIA also highlighted the presence of a new variant of avian influenza at the farm, including the D1.3 genotype linked to a human infection in Ohio.
