Macdonald bridge ramp closed after encampment fire

Fire at Homeless Encampment Near Angus L. Macdonald Bridge in Halifax

Authorities have confirmed that there were no injuries reported following a fire that broke out at a homeless encampment near the Angus L. Macdonald Bridge in Halifax on Tuesday morning.

According to a spokesperson for Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency, emergency crews responded to the encampment on Barrington Street near the ramp to the Macdonald Bridge just after 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

Reports from callers indicated smoke, flames, and sounds of small propane cylinders or other items exploding.

Halifax Regional Police have closed the ramp to the Macdonald Bridge to all traffic, and traffic on Barrington Street is limited to one lane in each direction.

The fire was swiftly brought under control with no reported injuries.

Halifax Fire officials have stated that the cause of the fire is currently unknown, and Halifax Harbour Bridges has assumed control of the scene.

The encampment, referred to as the Barrington Street green space, is one of five designated areas where individuals experiencing homelessness are permitted to camp for shelter purposes.
