US Election 2024

Majority in New York want challenger to Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul: poll

Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul’s approval ratings are on the rise, but a recent poll suggests that a majority of New Yorkers are leaning towards supporting someone else in the 2026 gubernatorial election. According to a Siena College poll conducted in early December, only 33% of registered voters in New York state would vote to re-elect Hochul for a second term, while 57% prefer another candidate.

Among Democrats, only 48% are currently in favor of re-electing Hochul, with a significant portion expressing a preference for a different candidate. The numbers are even more stark among independents and Republicans, with 65% and 85% respectively indicating a preference for someone else.

Hochul, who assumed the governorship in August 2021 following Andrew Cuomo’s resignation, is facing challenges due to her support for the upcoming New York City congestion pricing plan. The plan, set to take effect next month, will impose fees on passenger cars entering Midtown and Lower Manhattan during peak hours.

Despite the lukewarm reception to Hochul’s re-election bid, there is some positive news for the governor. Her favorability ratings have seen a slight improvement, with 39% of respondents viewing her favorably and 49% unfavorably. Similarly, her job approval rating has also increased, with 46% approving of her performance as governor.

While Hochul’s ratings remain below 50%, Siena College pollster Steven Greenberg noted that voters still prefer a Democrat over a Republican for the next governor, with a margin of 52-34%. This preference for a Democratic candidate could work in Hochul’s favor as she gears up for the 2026 election.

However, Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York has raised concerns about Hochul’s electability, warning that she is at risk of losing to a Republican candidate in 2026. Torres, who is considering a primary challenge against Hochul, highlighted the potential for a Republican victory for the first time in three decades.

As the political landscape in New York continues to evolve, Hochul will need to navigate these challenges and build support among voters to secure a second term as governor. The upcoming election promises to be a closely watched and highly contested race, with implications for the future direction of the Empire State.
