Man, 37, dead after being Tasered by Halifax police; 2nd similar incident in a week

Nova Scotia’s Police Watchdog Investigates Second Taser-Related Death
The Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) in Nova Scotia is launching an investigation following the death of a second individual who was Tasered by Halifax police within a week. The incident took place at a residence on Farringdon Way in Bedford, N.S., where a 37-year-old man was exhibiting erratic behavior.
According to Halifax police, the man became aggressive towards the officers, prompting them to use a Taser. After being subdued, the man was handcuffed and paramedics were called to the scene. Recognizing the need for medical attention, police administered first aid and naloxone, a medication used to counter the effects of opioid overdoses.
Despite efforts from paramedics and Halifax firefighters to save his life, the man was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Halifax police have referred all inquiries to SIRT, the independent agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police officers in Nova Scotia.
This tragic event comes shortly after another Taser-related death last weekend, where a 25-year-old man passed away following a mental health call on Vimy Avenue. In that case, the man was also Tasered during a confrontation with the police and later died while in police custody at the location.
These incidents raise concerns about the use of Tasers by law enforcement officers and the protocols surrounding their deployment in situations involving individuals experiencing mental health crises. SIRT’s investigation aims to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding both deaths and ensure accountability for any potential misconduct.
