Man charged with attempted murder in Dartmouth stabbing
Halifax Regional Police have charged a 47-year-old man with attempted murder in connection with a stabbing in Dartmouth early Wednesday morning.
Peter Guy Joseph Monteith is also facing charges of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, theft of a motor vehicle, flight from police and dangerous driving in a series of events that started just after 3 a.m. at the Lake City Motel on Lakecrest Drive.
When police arrived at the motel they found a 30-year-old man who had been stabbed. He was taken to hospital with injuries that were described at the time as life-threatening, but police have since said he is expected to survive.
The suspect fled in a vehicle, which was spotted a little over half an hour later on Wyse Road in Dartmouth. When police tried to stop it the driver sped off before crashing at Farrell Street Park at the intersection of Wyse and Albro Lake roads. He was not injured but was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Halifax police spokesman Const. John MacLeod said the vehicle was one being used by the victim, but did not belong to him. The stabbing happened before the theft, but the theft was not the reason for stabbing, he said.
Monteith is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth provincial court today.
