Man dead after spending night in police custody in Digby

The Nova Scotia police watchdog is currently investigating the tragic death of a man who passed away after spending the night in police custody in Digby, N.S.
According to a news release from the RCMP, officers responded to a call at a business on Warwick Street at 3 p.m. AT on Monday. They arrested a man outside for public intoxication and took him to the local detachment, where he remained in a cell overnight.
At 7 a.m. on Tuesday, the man experienced a medical emergency while in custody. Paramedics were called to the scene and administered first aid before transporting him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Neither the RCMP nor Nova Scotia’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) have provided details about the man’s age or place of residence. SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents stemming from police actions in the province.
