Man flees polar bear in Norway in dramatic escape, video shows

A heart-stopping video has emerged showing a man narrowly escaping a polar bear in Norway by dropping his gun and jumping onto a snowmobile. The incident took place in Pyramiden, an Arctic town in the Svalbard archipelago, in late April.
According to witness Rebecca Baack, who was staying at a hotel in the area, the terrifying encounter unfolded around midnight when a staff member attempted to scare away the bear, only to have it charge towards him. The footage captured by Baack begins with the sound of gunfire as the man frantically runs away from the polar bear.
In a desperate bid for safety, the man drops his weapon and leaps onto a nearby snowmobile, speeding away as the bear gives up its pursuit. A female voice can be heard in the background exclaiming, “Damn, that guy is brave.”
The Visit Svalbard tourism website describes polar bears as the “King of the Arctic” and one of the world’s largest carnivores. It warns visitors to be cautious when venturing out of settlements, advising them to always be accompanied by a local guide armed with a firearm due to the unpredictable nature of polar bear attacks.
Adult polar bears can weigh anywhere from 440 to 1,763 pounds and are known for their strength and aggression. Even cubs weighing less than 220 pounds can pose a serious threat to humans in their habitat.
The footage serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by these majestic yet formidable creatures in the wild. It is a testament to the quick thinking and bravery of individuals faced with such life-threatening situations.
As the man in the video managed to escape unharmed, it serves as a cautionary tale for anyone venturing into polar bear territory to always be prepared and vigilant. The incredible escape captured on camera is a testament to human resilience and survival instincts in the face of such a powerful predator.
