Artificial intelligence could spark massive job loss in U.S.: Expert

Artificial intelligence could potentially lead to a significant increase in unemployment, with some experts predicting a rise as high as 20%. Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, a leading AI company, issued a stark warning about the potential impact of AI on white-collar jobs in fields such as tech, finance, and law.

Amodei emphasized the need for executives and politicians to confront the reality of mass layoffs that could result from the widespread implementation of AI technology. He cautioned against downplaying the potential consequences, stating that many people are unaware of the impending job market upheaval.

According to Amodei, the job market disruption is expected to unfold over the next one to five years. While acknowledging the potential benefits of AI in driving economic growth and advancements in medicine, he also highlighted the possibility of a scenario where a significant portion of the population is without jobs despite other positive developments.

Currently, the national unemployment rate in the U.S. stands at 4.2%. Amodei’s warning comes amidst a competitive race among tech giants such as Google, Meta, and OpenAI to develop artificial general intelligence (AGI) – AI models with human-level cognitive capabilities or greater.

Amodei, who previously worked at OpenAI, founded Anthropic to focus on advancing AI technology. He is among several executives who have raised concerns about the impact of AI on the job market. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Google CEO Sundar Pichai have also acknowledged the potential for AI to disrupt traditional job roles, with Zuckerberg discussing the integration of AI into Meta’s workforce and Pichai highlighting the potential impact on knowledge workers.
