Christians increasingly persecuted worldwide as ‘modern and historical factors converge’

In a world where religious intolerance is on the rise, a recent report has shed light on the alarming trend of Christianity facing the brunt of persecution. The International Christian Concern (ICC) released a report titled “The Global Persecution Index 2025,” which highlighted the nations where religious oppression, particularly against Christians, is most prevalent.
According to the report, authoritarian leaders and Islamic extremist groups are the main perpetrators of religious persecution, with countries in Africa’s Sahel region, such as Mali, Niger, and Chad, being identified as the most dangerous for Christians. Other countries like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Somalia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and North Korea were also flagged as significant threats to the Christian faith.
The rise in authoritarian policies globally has led to more nations cracking down on religion, with Christians and Muslims facing the highest rates of harassment. A report by the Pew Research Center (PRC) found that Christians are targeted in more countries by governments or social groups than any other religious group, followed by Muslims and Jews.
Jeff King, president of the ICC, noted that Christianity is often seen as a threat to authoritarian regimes due to its emphasis on allegiance to a higher moral authority. The increasing accessibility of technology, such as social media, has enabled oppressive regimes to monitor and control religious dissent more effectively.
Countries like India and Pakistan have seen a surge in attacks against Christians, fueled by social media incitement and misinformation. The targeting of religious minorities is a disturbing trend reminiscent of historical atrocities carried out under oppressive policies.
As nations experience democratic backsliding and authoritarian leaders consolidate power, the fight for religious freedom becomes more urgent than ever. King warned that rising nationalism, global instability, and technological advancements are exacerbating the threat to religious minorities worldwide.
The need to protect religious freedom and combat religious intolerance has never been more critical. By shedding light on the persecution faced by Christians and other religious groups, we can work towards a more inclusive and tolerant society for all.
