Rose scores, Canadian women’s soccer team blanks Argentina 3-0
Jade Rose’s memorable first goal for Canada’s women’s soccer team will forever be etched in her mind, especially when she sees the replays capturing her shocked expression. The moment was truly surreal for Rose, who admitted, “I didn’t expect it. Which was, I feel like, visible on my face.”
Speaking after Canada’s 3-0 victory over Argentina in a friendly match at B.C. Place, Rose expressed her overwhelming emotions, “It’s an incredible feeling. It’s great to have my first goal back on home soil, to have my mom in the stands, it’s my sister Nyah’s birthday — it’s just a lot of things that made it a really great day.”
The seventh-ranked Canadian team dominated the game from the start, putting pressure on the 33rd ranked Argentina team. Head coach Casey Stoney acknowledged the team’s performance, stating, “I think we’ve always got to be happy when we’ve won and celebrate the wins. I think there’s still lots of work for us to do.”
Canada opened the scoring in the 24th minute through a set piece. Adriana Leon’s free kick found Vanessa Gilles, whose header was saved by the Argentine goalkeeper, but Rose was quick to pounce on the rebound and slot the ball into the net.
The Canadians continued to create chances, with Marie-Yasmine Alidou and Leon coming close to adding to the lead. In the 39th minute, another well-worked goal saw Leon provide a cross for Nichelle Prince to score and double Canada’s advantage.
Despite having a goal ruled out for offside, Canada sealed the victory in the 87th minute when Julia Grosso’s long-range effort found the back of the net. Grosso, who replaced Alidou in the second half, received praise from coach Stoney for her performance.
The win marked Stoney’s first game as head coach on home soil since taking charge in January. With a record of 3-0-1 under her leadership, Stoney emphasized the importance of growing attendance at future matches to support the team.
A crowd of 12,219 spectators witnessed the victory, but Stoney believes there is room for improvement in boosting attendance numbers. The two teams are set to face each other again in another friendly match in Langford, B.C., on Tuesday.
The Canadian women’s soccer team’s successful performance against Argentina showcased their talent and determination, setting the stage for more exciting matches to come.
