Mayor of Alberta town says there’s nothing he can do about ‘Let’s join the USA!’ billboard

The town of Bowden, Alberta, has recently found itself at the center of controversy due to a billboard that calls for Alberta to join the United States. The billboard, featuring a picture of Alberta Premier Danielle Smith alongside U.S. President Donald Trump, has sparked outrage among residents and raised questions about the town’s involvement in the ad.
Mayor Robb Stuart was taken aback when he received angry emails from residents expressing their disgust at the billboard. However, he clarified that the town of Bowden had no hand in approving the sign and lacks the authority to remove it. The billboard, owned by Spot Ads, does not violate the company’s standards, leaving Bowden residents frustrated and feeling misrepresented.
The organization behind the ad, America Fund, is linked to Western Canadian separatist movements, including the Alberta 51 Project and Wexit. The group aims to counter Ottawa’s threats of imposing tariffs on oil and gas exports by advocating for Alberta to become the 51st state. The controversial campaign has drawn criticism from Premier Smith, who emphasized her commitment to Canada’s sovereignty.
Despite the backlash, Spot Ads defended the billboard, citing freedom of speech as protected by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. However, residents of Bowden have expressed their disapproval, with many labeling the ad as treason and an embarrassment. The majority of Canadians, as indicated by recent polls, reject the idea of joining the United States, echoing the sentiments of Bowden residents.
Mayor Stuart acknowledged the diversity of opinions in the town but emphasized that the decision to join the U.S. ultimately lies with individuals. While the billboard has stirred up strong emotions and sparked debate, the town of Bowden remains united in its stance against the controversial proposal.
The ongoing saga surrounding the billboard serves as a reminder of the complexities of national identity and the importance of dialogue and understanding in navigating such contentious issues. As Bowden grapples with the fallout from the ad, residents continue to voice their concerns and stand firm in their allegiance to Canada.
