NY Gov. Hochul touts newly placed cameras in ‘every single subway car’

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has taken bold steps to address the surge in violent crimes in the New York City subway system. In response to recent incidents, including a homeless woman being burned alive and a man being pushed onto subway tracks, Governor Hochul announced that security cameras have been installed in every subway car. This move is aimed at helping law enforcement solve crimes more quickly and effectively.

Governor Hochul, a Democrat, has also deployed 1,000 National Guard members to patrol the subway system, emphasizing that public safety is her top priority. She directed the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to install cameras in subway cars, a project that has now been completed. Hochul believes that these security measures will play a crucial role in combating the rise in violent crimes in the subway system.

Many of the recent violent incidents in the subway system have involved individuals with serious untreated mental illness. Governor Hochul attributed this to a failure to provide adequate mental health care and supportive housing, as well as weak state laws governing the involuntary commitment of dangerous individuals. She announced plans to introduce legislation to improve the process through which courts can order certain individuals to participate in assisted outpatient treatment.

Despite these efforts, Governor Hochul has faced criticism for not taking stronger action to protect subway passengers. Activist Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels citizen law enforcement group, criticized Hochul for not being more proactive in addressing the issue of mentally unstable individuals on the subways. Sliwa called on the governor to leverage her power and push for legislation that would commit emotionally disturbed individuals to state psychiatric hospitals.

New York Council member Joe Borelli, a Republican, also criticized Democrats for implementing soft-on-crime policies that have contributed to the rise in violence in the subway system. Borelli highlighted the closure of mental health facilities and the impact of bail reform and “raise the age” laws on criminal behavior.

Governor Hochul’s efforts to enhance security in the subway system and address the underlying issues contributing to violent crime are commendable. It is essential for state lawmakers to work together to implement effective solutions that prioritize public safety and support those in need of mental health care. By taking decisive action, Governor Hochul is demonstrating her commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all New Yorkers.
