Creighton basketball coach makes bold claim after Bluejays upset top-ranked Kansas

The Creighton basketball teams have just secured their most significant victory of 2024. In a stunning upset, the Bluejays took down the No. 1 ranked Kansas Jayhawks with a final score of 76-63. At one point in the game, Creighton held a commanding 17-point lead, solidifying their dominance on the court.

Following the game, Creighton head coach Greg McDermott made a bold statement, declaring, “This is the building where No. 1 teams come to die evidently,” as jubilant fans rushed the court in celebration.

This victory against Kansas echoes a similar upset from last season when the Bluejays defeated the then top-ranked UConn Huskies on their home court in Omaha. The 85-66 triumph in February of the previous season also sparked a euphoric court-storming moment.

Under McDermott’s guidance, Creighton has made nine appearances in the NCAA tournament, reaching the Sweet 16 three times. The win over Kansas marks the program’s 15th victory over a top-10 opponent since McDermott took over as head coach in 2010.

Looking ahead, Creighton is set to face UNLV in Omaha for their next game, scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. ET tip-off on December 7th. On the other hand, Kansas will hit the road to take on Missouri on December 8th.
