Michelle Obama books a speaking engagement for October in Halifax
Former US First Lady Michelle Obama will give a speech in Halifax on October 18 as part of Co-op Week.
The Nova Scotia Cooperative Council, a non-profit organization, announced the performance on Wednesday. The event at the Scotiabank center is part of the celebration of the 75th anniversary.
“The event aims to promote the values of the co-op movement and credit unions while embracing themes of hope, optimism, resilience, kindness, community and impact,” a press release said.
In partnership with six post-secondary institutions, charities and non-profit organizations in Atlantic Canada, the council plans to welcome more than 3,000 “bright minds” to the event for free.
Limited tickets will go on sale to the public the week of August 10, the release said.
“We are honored and excited that Ms. Obama has chosen to join us for her first Atlantic-Canadian engagement following her incredibly successful book tour,” Board Chair Dianne Kelderman said in the release.
“How fitting to host this event in a cooperative spirit along with the support of so many others during Canadian Co-op Week. We know the event will be inspiring, thought-provoking and groundbreaking.”
Michelle Obama’s husband, former US President Barack Obama, spoke at the same Halifax arena in 2019.
