Moderate GOP senator says she will vote against confirmation of Pete Hegseth for defense secretary

Republican Senator Susan Collins of Maine has made it clear that she will not be supporting the nomination of Pete Hegseth, President Donald Trump’s choice to lead the defense department. Collins cited Hegseth’s lack of experience and expressed concerns over his past comments regarding women.

During Hegseth’s confirmation hearing in January, several Republican senators were still undecided about his nomination. He faced tough questions from members of the Armed Services Committee, further complicating his path to confirmation.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Collins expressed her reservations about Hegseth. She acknowledged his military service and dedication to servicemembers and their families but ultimately questioned his qualifications for the job. “While I appreciate his courageous military service and his ongoing commitment to our servicemembers and their families, I am concerned that he does not have the experience and perspective necessary to succeed in the job,” Collins wrote.

Collins also highlighted Hegseth’s limited managerial experience, pointing out that he had only run two small non-profit organizations with mixed results. She specifically raised concerns about Hegseth’s statements regarding women serving in the military. “I am also concerned about multiple statements, including some in the months just before he was nominated, that Mr. Hegseth has made about women serving in the military. He and I had a candid conversation in December about his past statements and apparently evolving views. I am not convinced that his position on women serving in combat roles has changed,” Collins explained.

The decision by Senator Collins adds to the growing uncertainty surrounding Hegseth’s nomination. With key Republican senators expressing doubts about his qualifications and past statements, Hegseth’s path to confirmation remains uncertain.

As the debate over Hegseth’s nomination continues, it is clear that his confirmation is far from guaranteed. The concerns raised by Senator Collins and other Republican senators highlight the challenges Hegseth faces in securing the support needed to lead the defense department.

In the midst of this uncertainty, it is essential for the Senate to carefully consider Hegseth’s qualifications and past statements before making a final decision on his nomination. The future of the defense department and the role of women in the military are at stake, making it crucial for senators to thoroughly evaluate Hegseth’s suitability for the position.
