Russia warns that Trump’s threats to bomb Iran are ‘illegal and unacceptable’

Russia is pushing back against President Donald Trump’s threats to bomb Iran, calling them “illegal and unacceptable.” Trump has been increasingly vocal in his warnings to Iran, citing concerns over the country’s support for the Houthi terrorist group and its nuclear program. In response, Russia has stated that it is committed to finding solutions to Iran’s nuclear program that respect its rights to peaceful nuclear energy.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova condemned the use of military force against Iran, stating that threats to bomb Iran’s nuclear facilities would lead to a global catastrophe. She emphasized that such threats are unacceptable and urged for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing tensions.

Rebekah Koffler, a former DIA intelligence officer specializing in Russia’s war-fighting strategy, noted that Russia’s statement aligns with its diplomatic posture as Iran’s strategic partner. Despite historical tensions between Russia and Iran, Koffler explained that Russia is positioning itself as a mediator between the Trump administration and the Iranian government on nuclear issues.

President Trump’s recent overtures to Iran, including a letter to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, seeking to jump-start talks on dismantling Iran’s nuclear weapons program, were met with rejection. Trump warned of potential bombing if a deal is not reached, as well as the possibility of imposing secondary tariffs on countries that do business with Iran.

Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized the importance of trust in negotiations, stating that the breach of promises has caused issues in the past. Iran is currently enriching uranium to 60%, just below the 90% weapons-grade level. Experts warn that Iran could have a nuclear weapon within weeks if it takes the final steps to build one.

In the midst of escalating tensions, Russia’s stance against military action and support for diplomatic solutions reflects a nuanced approach to the complex geopolitical dynamics at play. As the international community grapples with the Iranian nuclear issue, the need for constructive dialogue and cooperation remains paramount.
