SNAP recipients may be barred from junk food purchases under new House GOP bill

House Republicans are considering new restrictions on food stamps as part of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s initiative to “Make America Healthy Again.” Rep. Josh Brecheen, R-Okla., is spearheading “The Healthy SNAP Act,” which aims to prohibit the purchase of most junk foods using the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Brecheen emphasized the importance of President Trump’s mandate to prioritize the health of Americans, with support from RFK Jr. and Senator Marco Rubio.

The proposed bill would prevent food stamps from being used to buy items such as soft drinks, candy, ice cream, and prepared desserts like cakes and cookies. Seven Republican lawmakers have endorsed the legislation as co-sponsors. Rubio, who previously collaborated with Sen. Cory Booker on SNAP reform efforts, has also advocated for improving nutrition security and diet quality within the program.

Brecheen highlighted the potential cost savings and health benefits associated with the bill. He pointed out that federally funded healthcare expenses related to obesity and obesity-related diseases amount to $400 billion annually. By curbing the purchase of unhealthy foods with taxpayer funds, the legislation aims to address the significant financial burden on programs like Medicaid.

The shift towards prioritizing nutrition and health within the Republican Party represents a departure from past resistance to initiatives like Michelle Obama’s push for healthier school meals. Kennedy, once a Democrat and now an Independent, has played a pivotal role in reshaping the national conversation on health and nutrition. His alliance with President-elect Donald Trump led to his nomination as Secretary of Health and Human Services, despite potential challenges due to his controversial views on vaccines.
