Nova Scotia’s Environment Department has granted final approval for the $1.7-billion Goldboro gold mine project in the eastern part of the province.

Owned by NexGold Mining Corp., the open-pit mine construction is scheduled to commence in 2026.

The project is expected to bring in approximately $528 million in tax revenue over a 15-year period, along with creating 230 on-site jobs and numerous spinoff employment opportunities.

NexGold has also established benefits agreements with the Municipality of the District of Guysborough and the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs.

The mine underwent environmental assessment registration in August 2018, and the company has secured a 779-hectare lease of Crown land for the project.
