N.S. funding new mental health and addictions master’s nursing program at Dalhousie
HALIFAX, N.S. — Dalhousie University is now accepting registered nurse applications for a new two-year mental health and addictions care master’s program.
The 22-seat program, a first in Atlantic Canada, offers advanced skills and education in mental health and addiction care.
Open to nurses with two years of clinical experience in the mental health and addiction field within the last five years, students can complete the program in two years as a full-time student or three years as a part-time student.
Participants will be required to complete 250 clinical practicum hours in a variety of mental health settings
“The new program will help nurses grow their clinical expertise to help Nova Scotians, as well as pass their knowledge to their fellow nurses who are building careers in mental health and addictions,” said Addictions and Mental Health minister Brian Comer.
The program is being supported by the Office of Addictions and Mental Health and the Department of Advanced Education with $306,600 for 2023-24 of funding and further funding in future years:
- $237,000 in 2024-25;
- $187,000 in 2025-26;
- $160,000 annually in 2026-27 to 2030-31;
- $150,000 in 2031-32 and going forward.
Applications for the program close on April 1.
The province also said qualifying full-time students are eligible for an entrance award equal to the first term’s tuition.
