N.S. program to help seniors live independently accepting applications in Kings County

COLDBROOK, N.S. — A new initiative to keep more Kings County seniors living independently in their own homes is now open for applications.

Under the first-of-its-kind Community Aging in Place, Advancing Better Living for Elders (CAPABLE) program, a nurse, occupational therapist and handyperson will visit the eligible senior to determine and implement changes that foster more independent living.

Program teams will work with seniors to set goals and introduce new skills, exercises and house modifications, according to the news release.

It may include doing exercises to improve strength and mobility, reviewing medications, rearranging furniture to improve accessibility, installing grab bars, improving lighting, as well as raising toilet seats, lever faucets and lever door handles.

The $2-million project, which opened to Preston seniors last December, will be operated by VON Nova Scotia and available to 100 seniors in Kings County.

To be eligible, applicants must be 65 or older, have physical or mobility challenges, and have a net income of $85,000 or less or receive income assistance, the province’s heating assistance rebate or the guaranteed income supplement from Service Canada.

More information and applications are available online or by calling 1-888-925-6101.

Meanwhile, applications for Cherry Brook, Lake Loon, North Preston, East Preston and the surrounding area remain open and applications for those on the Halifax Peninsula are expected to open later this winter.
