Trump offers way for Canada to avoid tariffs: ‘Become our Cherished 51st State’

President Donald Trump has once again raised eyebrows with his suggestion that Canada should become the 51st state of the United States. In a recent post on TRUTH Social, Trump argued that the U.S. is currently subsidizing Canada to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars, without receiving much in return. He highlighted that the U.S. has abundant energy resources, a thriving automobile industry, and a surplus of lumber, making the need for Canadian subsidies unnecessary. Trump boldly stated that without this massive subsidy, Canada would struggle to remain a viable country.

The President proposed that if Canada were to join the U.S. as a state, it would benefit from lower taxes and enhanced military protection. Additionally, Trump emphasized that as a state, Canada would be exempt from any tariffs imposed by the U.S., providing further economic advantages.

This suggestion comes after Trump signed an executive order implementing a 25% tariff on goods entering the U.S. from Canada, citing concerns about the flow of illicit drugs across the northern border. The order also imposes a 10% duty on energy resources from Canada. Trump expressed frustration with Canada’s role in allowing criminal activities to seep into the U.S. and emphasized the need for stricter border control measures.

In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum vowed to retaliate against the U.S. for the imposed tariffs. Trudeau announced plans to impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, with immediate tariffs on $30 billion set to take effect soon.

While tensions are running high between the U.S. and its neighboring countries, Canadian Ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman emphasized the importance of upholding existing trade agreements and finding a resolution to the escalating trade dispute.
