Nearly half of the students at a Lewisporte school are in the band

Lewisporte Collegiate in central Newfoundland is home to a vibrant and thriving school band, where almost half of the high school students are actively involved in musical performances. The driving force behind this musical phenomenon is none other than the beloved band director, Adam Baxter.

With 250 high school students at Lewisporte Collegiate, it is impressive that 120 of them are dedicated members of the school band. Baxter, who has been leading the band for over a decade, has a knack for teaching a variety of instruments to a large group of students. He divides the band into three groups, each meeting three to four times a week for rehearsals.

Teaching a diverse group of instruments simultaneously requires patience and skill, which Baxter has honed over the years. He strives to create a unique learning environment that fosters teamwork and a love for music. “We’re building a culture here,” Baxter explains. “It’s not like we’re not sitting and doing anything with books. We just come together, we play music.”

Principal Krista Freake acknowledges the positive impact that the school band has had on students, despite the challenges of fitting it into the school schedule. She emphasizes the importance of music in the overall growth and academic success of young people.

For students like Cooper Grimes and Joshua Pope, being part of the school band offers valuable opportunities for teamwork and friendship. Grimes, who plays the trumpet, highlights how working together as a band enhances collaboration skills that can be applied beyond music. Pope, a percussionist, credits Baxter for his dedication to music and the support he provides to students.

The students at Lewisporte Collegiate have found a sense of camaraderie and joy through their participation in the school band, thanks to the leadership and guidance of Adam Baxter. Their passion for music and dedication to teamwork are evident in their performances, making the school band a cherished part of their high school experience.
