New Halifax elementary school won’t be ready for September

The highly anticipated new St. Joseph’s-Alexander McKay Elementary School in Halifax has faced yet another setback, leaving families disappointed and frustrated. In a message sent to families, the Halifax Regional Centre for Education announced that the school will not be ready for the start of the 2025-26 school year as originally planned.

Originally scheduled to open in 2023, the project has encountered delays and complications that have extended the timeline for completion. The Department of Public Works, responsible for the construction, has assured that the contractor is working diligently to have the school ready for students midway through the upcoming school year. Updates on the project timeline will be provided by the Halifax Regional Centre for Education as progress continues.

Described as “unexpectedly complicated,” the construction of the new school has faced challenges common in the industry. Additional trades workers and contractors have been brought in, and efforts to expedite the process include overtime and weekend work. Despite these efforts, the completion date has been pushed back, causing concerns among parents and students.

As a result of the delay, students will remain at École Beaufort until the new school is ready for occupancy. This temporary arrangement has raised issues regarding the adequacy of facilities at the current school, with parents expressing dissatisfaction with the lack of essential amenities such as a gymnasium, music room, and library. The extended commute for students and limited opportunities for parental involvement have further exacerbated the situation.

Jesse LeGallais, a parent of two children at St. Joseph’s-Alexander McKay, has been vocal in advocating for the school and raising concerns about the impact of the delay on students and families. Despite the challenges, he remains committed to supporting the school and believes that collective action from parents can bring about positive change.

In light of the ongoing challenges faced by the St. Joseph’s-Alexander McKay Elementary School project, it is essential for stakeholders to stay informed and engaged in advocating for the best interests of the students. By working together and maintaining open communication, the community can ensure that the new school meets the needs of its students and provides a conducive learning environment for all.
