New IRCC policy now allows foreign workers to study without permission

Last updated June 27, 2023, 11:07 AM EDT (Toronto time)

Today the Honorable Sean Fraser, Secretary of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship (IRCC) announces new temporary policy in favor of foreign workers inCanada.

Under this new policy, temporary foreign workers with a work permit in Canada can enroll in courses longer than 6 months without the need for a study visa/permit.

This new interim injunction applies from 27 June to anyone who has a work permit or whose extension of the work permit is still pending.

This policy will remain in effect for the next 3 years until June 27, 2026.

IRCC has removed the limit on the length of a study program for work permit holders.

Previously, TWV holders needed a study visa/permit if they wanted to follow a course for longer than 6 months.

Each year, tens of thousands of temporary foreign workers bring their expertise to Canada, boosting the economy and filling important gaps in the job market.

Foreign workers contribute significantly to Canada’s GDP, but they sometimes face restrictions on the types of educational programs they can enroll in to pursue their goals and seize new opportunities.

This new policy will improve employment opportunities for foreigners, as well as their chances of settling here permanently.

This new policy is great news for people who want to continue their education and receive additional training, especially those who need to upskill or confirm their international qualifications through specific programs.

With this new temporary facility for three years, holders of a work permit are free to study full-time or part-time as long as their work permit is valid or until the end of the policy.
