NFL news: Patriots’ Will Campbell stands by vow that he’d ‘die’ for Drake Maye

The New England Patriots have high hopes for their first-round draft pick, left tackle Will Campbell. Campbell made headlines on draft day when he declared that he would be willing to die for his quarterback, Drake Maye. Despite the bold statement, Campbell stands by his words and considers Maye to be his guy.

Campbell, a former LSU star, recently appeared on “Dudes on Dudes” with former Patriots stars Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman, where he reaffirmed his commitment to Maye. However, Campbell’s availability for the Patriots’ Week 1 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders is uncertain due to an ankle injury. He was listed as a limited participant in practice and is questionable for the game.

The Patriots selected Campbell with the fourth overall pick in the NFL Draft with the expectation that he will become a cornerstone of their offensive line. The team is counting on Campbell to protect Maye’s blindside for years to come.

Despite his injury, Campbell showed promise during the preseason, giving fans hope for his potential impact on the team. In addition to Campbell’s uncertain status, All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez has been ruled out for the game against the Raiders due to a hamstring injury. Gonzalez, who is entering his third season, is a key player in the Patriots’ defense.

Last season, Gonzalez was named second-team All-Pro after playing in all 16 games. In his rookie year, he was limited to just four games due to injuries. The Patriots will need to rely on other members of their secondary to step up in Gonzalez’s absence.
