NHL news: Sidney Crosby scores 600th goal
PITTSBURGH – Sidney Crosby Scores 600th NHL Goal in Penguins’ Loss
Sidney Crosby achieved a significant milestone by scoring his 600th NHL goal, becoming the 21st player in history to reach this impressive mark. The momentous occasion occurred during the Pittsburgh Penguins’ recent 6-1 defeat against the Utah Hockey Club.
Reflecting on the milestone, Crosby expressed mixed emotions, stating, “It’s not enjoyable, obviously. It was a nice reception and a cool moment. I thought we got some momentum and we were doing some good things, but unfortunately, the game got away from us.”
Crosby’s historic goal came in the second period, with just 10 seconds left on a 5-on-3 power play. He capitalized on a one-timer from the right side of the net, assisted by Erik Karlsson. Despite the loss, Crosby’s achievement was met with a standing ovation from the crowd, including his parents who were in attendance.
Joining the elite ranks of players with 600 goals, Crosby stands alongside Washington’s Alex Ovechkin as the only active players to reach this milestone. Ovechkin achieved the feat in 2018 and currently trails only Wayne Gretzky in all-time goals scored.
Notably, Crosby’s 600th goal solidifies his legacy with the Penguins, making him the seventh player in NHL history to reach this milestone with a single team. He now joins Mario Lemieux as the only two players in Penguins’ history to achieve the 600-goal mark.
In addition to his goal-scoring prowess, Crosby’s career achievements include three Stanley Cups and two Conn Smythe trophies, placing him in elite company alongside Gretzky in NHL history.
Looking ahead, Crosby humbly acknowledged the significance of reaching 600 goals, stating, “It’s a nice number. I think that’s something you probably think about more after the fact when you’re done playing.”
