Nigerian Bishop threatened after testifying about Christian killings

A Nigerian bishop has found himself at the center of a deadly storm after he bravely spoke out against the targeted killing of Christians in his home country. Bishop Wilfred Anagbe, who hails from the Makurdi Diocese in north-central Nigeria, recently traveled to Washington D.C. to testify before lawmakers about the escalating violence against Christians in his region.

Following his testimony, Bishop Anagbe’s village and diocese were subjected to a series of brutal attacks by “terrorist Jihadists.” In just 10 days, four separate incidents occurred, leaving a trail of death and destruction in their wake. This wave of violence underscores the dangerous reality faced by Christians in Nigeria, where religious extremists are on a mission to eradicate Christianity and establish Sharia law.

According to the latest data from NGO Open Doors International, Nigeria ranks as one of the most perilous places for Christians worldwide. Shockingly, 69% of the 4,476 Christians killed globally in the reporting period were in Nigeria. Islamist militant groups like Fulani militants, Boko Haram, and ISWAP are responsible for carrying out targeted attacks against Christian communities, leaving many vulnerable to persecution and violence.

One prominent church leader in Nigeria, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed grave concern about the ongoing religious violence in the country. He highlighted the fact that Christian communities are being systematically targeted by militants who seek to impose Islamic rule and eradicate Christianity from the region.

Bishop Anagbe’s courageous testimony before Congress has sparked a chain of events that have put his life in danger. In the wake of his appearance, he received credible threats from high-level sources in Nigeria, prompting foreign embassies to warn him of potential harm upon his return.

Despite the risks he faces, Bishop Anagbe remains resolute in his mission to raise awareness about the atrocities being committed against Christians in Nigeria. He urges the international community to take action and prevent a potential genocide or ethnic cleansing from unfolding in his country.

As the violence escalates and innocent lives are lost, the world must not turn a blind eye to the plight of Nigerian Christians. The time to act is now, before the situation spirals out of control and leads to catastrophic consequences. Bishop Anagbe’s bravery serves as a reminder of the urgent need to stand up against religious persecution and defend the fundamental right to freedom of religion for all.
