No injuries in tent fire in Berwick

RCMP say there were no injuries when a tent being used by someone in Berwick caught fire Tuesday morning.

Const. Dominic Laflamme said the fire was deemed to be accidental and caused by a lamp being used inside the tent.

The tent was located along Commercial Street in the town.

There have been a number of fires in the past few months in tents used by those without permanent housing in Halifax Regional Municipaliity. Concerns have been raised ahout the safety of people forced to live rough and the risks they are facing, including fire, carbon monoxide poisoning and tent collapses.

In Halifax, a campaign was started to buy more sturdy collapsible ice fishing huts for people to live in.

On Wednesday afternoon, the province announced details of where new Pallet homes will be set for people who do do need housing and support options for those who are living in the structures.
