‘No reason to think’ Americans want to trigger early CUSMA review, says Dominic LeBlanc

Canada’s International Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc recently stated that while the United States has not indicated any interest in triggering an early review of the North American free trade deal, there is a mutual desire to address economic and security issues together. In an interview on “Rosemary Barton Live,” LeBlanc emphasized the need for progress on tariffs that have been impacting both countries for several months.

Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump also focused on the importance of lifting tariffs on Canadian goods as part of any trade agreement. During their discussions, Trump expressed a willingness to renegotiate the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Free Trade Agreement (CUSMA), acknowledging its benefits for all countries but indicating a need for certain adjustments.

Despite previous reports suggesting that tariffs were being used as leverage for early negotiations, LeBlanc highlighted the American government’s interest in working collaboratively with Canada on economic and security matters. While Trump and key trade representatives will be away from Washington in the coming week, there is optimism that a short-term work plan can be developed upon their return to address tariff issues promptly.

Yukon Premier Ranj Pillai echoed the sentiment that lifting tariffs should be a thoughtful and strategic process, emphasizing the need for a fair renegotiation of CUSMA. Pillai also emphasized the importance of Canada strengthening its economy and exploring new avenues of cooperation with the U.S. to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.

As Carney prepares to announce his new cabinet and outline legislative priorities in the upcoming throne speech, there is anticipation among northern premiers and Canadians nationwide regarding the government’s commitments and budget allocations. Pillai stressed the significance of tangible actions and investments in the territories to build confidence and propel the country forward.
