Nova Scotia Health holding session in Springhill in wake of drug deaths
In the wake of two suspected drug overdose deaths in Springhill last week, Nova Scotia Health is hosting a drop-in community wellness event Wednesday in the community.
“These events have touched many, and understandably the community has questions about what resources are available,” the organization said in a news release.
The drop-in event will provide support and share information on substance use harm reduction strategies for all ages. It will happen from 1-4 p.m. and is hosted by Public Health and Nova Scotia Health’s mental health and addictions program.
It will take place at the Dr. Carson and Marion Murray Community Centre at 6 Main St.
There will be health promotion, outreach, nursing and clinical staff there to provide support and information on harm reduction strategies and how people can access services, along with Naloxone use instructions and information on where to get kits. Naloxone can provide temporary relief from overdoses, allowing time to get someone to emergency medical treatment.
Nova Scotia Health spokesman Brendan Elliott said senior leaders within the mental health and addictions program contacted elected officials in the area, and community organizations were interested in working with them to hold the session.
RCMP spokesman Cpl. Guillume Tremblay said that the Springhill deaths and another in Cole Harbour on Sunday remains under investigation. Investigators are still waiting on autopsy results and lab results for items seized from one of the homes in Springhill.
