Nova Scotia is purchasing 25 furnished modular homes for residents displaced by wildfires

HALIFAX, NS — The government of Nova Scotia has announced it will spend $7.4 million to temporarily house residents displaced by the recent wildfires in Shelburne County and Halifax Regional Municipality.

The money will be used to buy 25 two- and three-bedroom modular rental homes – each approximately 84 to 93 square meters – with furniture, appliances and service connections.

Rents range from about $1,000 to $2,000 per month, depending on people’s circumstances, such as location and insurance status. The rental agreements will be on a monthly basis.

“People who have suddenly lost their homes or suffered significant damage need housing now, and we have been working urgently with our partners to come up with affordable housing options that will allow people to stay in their communities,” said Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister John Lohr . “These modules will provide a safe and comfortable space for people who need them as they work through the trauma of losing their home and the stress of possible rebuilding or repair.”

People in need can place the modular home on their current property during the renovation. The county is also working to identify land where modular homes can be set up for those who don’t have space on their property.

Kent Homes will install the homes with leasing and management by the Nova Scotia Provincial Housing Agency. The Canadian Red Cross will provide referrals and rental support.

The county is also in talks with other modular home providers that have units available, and officials said more information will be shared as contracts finalize.
